Obituary

Kingston Cheng-Wu Yong went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 17, 2023 at the age of 76 in Dallas, TX. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by his wife, family and many loved ones who ministered to him by reading the Bible and singing hymns in the hospital after he suffered a stroke.

He was born in Honolulu (Kaimuki), HI, and as a boy, lived in Honolulu, Guam and the Big Island. He grew up with his grandmother living next door and eight aunts, two uncles and 29 cousins all residing in Hawaii.

He boarded at Hawaii Preparatory Academy for middle school and high school in Kamuela. He attended the University of Hawaii (Manoa) and the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque) on ROTC scholarships. In Navy ROTC, he served aboard a ship for a short time during the Vietnam War where he notably received the radio signal message on board announcing the Six-Day War, part of the Arab-Israeli conflict. He completed his BS at Georgia State University with teaching certification.

After high school graduation, he worked at CRU headquarters where he received the Lord Jesus and began to love the Bible. His sisters’ prayers were answered! From that point forward, he was active in pursuing Christian fellowship and fervently studied the Bible.

In 1969, he visited the church in Los Angeles, and under the ministry of the Word, he saw God’s purpose, Christ and the Church, giving himself to this vision. He moved to Atlanta, GA, and then Memphis, TN, all with a heart to migrate for the Lord to have His increase on the Earth. In Memphis, he met Joy and married her on March 2, 1974. Their honeymoon trip doubled as a move to Austin, TX, where he continued to work as a high school teacher, had an open home where they pursued a day-by-day and house-to-house church life (Acts 2:42-47), expanded their family with two children and received a MA in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas (Austin). Kingston transitioned to working as a professional engineer and the family lived in Shreveport, LA, Irving, TX, Norman, OK and Dallas, TX. Later, he worked for Southwest Airlines and traveled often with his wife.

Many were added to the household of faith and encouraged in faith through his ministry of the Word and living for the Lord together with his wife. His endeavoring to shepherd many was with a heart for the building up of the Body of Christ and with a living hope of being prepared with other believers to be the Bride of Christ and to consummate the New Jerusalem (Ephesians 5:29-32; Revelation 19:7-9; Revelation 21-22).

Kingston is survived by his wife of 49 years: Joy; his children: Grace-Anne (Jedidiah) and Nathanael; his grandsons: Fisher and Walker; his sisters: Lana and Mahealani (Jack); and many extended family members. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Laura Nora Yong.
